David miller is a senior at the university of wisconsin-eau claire, where he is majoring in actuarial science. David was the treasurer for the student-led actuarial club last year, and he interned this past summer at travelers insurance in st. Paul, minnesota. We spoke with david in august 2019. Tell us one thing about you that’s not on your resume.

WHO WE WORK WITH

Mathematics is one of the oldest and most fundamental sciences. Mathematicians use mathematical theory, computational techniques, algorithms, and the latest computer technology to solve economic, scientific, engineering, and business problems. The work of mathematicians falls into two broad classes: theoretical (pure) mathematics and applied mathematics. These classes, however, are not sharply defined and often overlap.

This makes me feel better about my work. After graduating i got a job as a assistant statistician. There was no one else familiar with statistics or anything related to data. I have been mainly stopping projects from being done, or stating what the data can't tell you mainly due to it being bad.

I never start work until my kids are at school. I don’t have my emails on my phone (deliberately) and i don’t turn the laptop on until my kids have safely stepped inside the school grounds. Sure, i check my work apps on my phone like a addict. 078 seconds after they have gone inside, but technically i have waited for school drop off to be complete before my work day starts.

In this position, there is a lot of training of how to use mathematical models to forecast the insurance reserves for their different products. There is training and usage of sql and sas which allows the interns to practice their coding abilities as well. An incoming intern could expect to have plenty of independent projects tailored towards building the intern’s skills. They will have lots of opportunities to get help with these projects from fellow workers and managers, all of whom are always happy to help.
