The history of cartography traces the development of cartography , or mapmaking technology, in human history. Maps have been one of the most important human inventions for millennia, allowing humans to explain and navigate their way through the world. The earliest archaeological maps include cave paintings , to ancient maps of babylon , greece , china , and india. In their most simple form maps are two dimensional constructs, however since the age of classical greece maps have also been projected onto a three-dimensional sphere known as a globe. In the 21st century, with the onset of the information age and the subsequent increase in computing power, maps can now be digitized in numerical form, transmitted and updated via satellite gps.

In 2005 i attended my third esri user conference and off the back of being constantly asked why i hadn’t written a book on cartography i hunted out then esri press manager peter adams and his colleague kathleen morgan. I pitched an idea of a book to them on cartography and they were receptive. I’d never intended to write a book because there are plenty of really good books on cartography already available. I wasn’t sure i could honestly add anything to what already existed. I returned to my day job in the uk and, as was ever the case, university life got in the way of the idea and it didn’t really get anywhere.

European colonizers first imposed borders on the americas by drafting maps. Arbitrary lines, written to justify genocide, became symbols of private prosperity in the so-called “new world. ” indigenous cultures were supplanted by the western canon, which developed an alternative history of the lands to vindicate itself. Settler colonialism continues to inflect mainstream media, rationalizing housing segregation and police violence as byproducts of law and order. One volunteer group is working against this narrative, decolonizing cartography in an effort to envision the world before and after capitalist exploitation.

At its core, cartography is about the visual representation of a space or place. While this may seem like a simple concept at first glance, it can become infinitely complex when you consider the number of choices that have to be made when creating a map. In addition, modern mapmakers have a greater variety and a much greater volume of data to leverage; because of this complexity, we wanted to look at the fundamentals of cartography and explore the key elements of mapping as well as the purpose and usage of different kinds of maps.

Example is the only multiplayer map to include fuel rod cannons, and includes custom "silenced" smgs that are quieter than the ones in other maps and have laser pointers. Example is the smallest map in any halo game and is unusually dense with explosives. Can also be directly downloaded here (for those that don't want to install the editor).
