Dental professionals examine not just the teeth, but the bone, structures/anatomy of the head and neck, and can detect diseases in which some specialties are just not able to do without the proper education/knowledge. One of the first things my dental instructors taught our class was that we're considered more of an educator than anything - which is true, you'd be surprised how many people have no idea how to brush/floss properly, etc i think a big part for me is the fact that dentistry is so incredibly flexible and i get to do what i love - help people. I can work part time and not have to work crazy odd shifts and still make a decent income. As for dentists, it's a hard job, especially if you own your own practice, but the money is good and it has its benefits just like any other job.
