Com hi neighbor, during a planning meeting years ago, i proposed some story i don’t recall that probably would have advanced the cause of some staten island non-profit institution i don’t recall. One of my news editors challenged me. I relish a challenge. We all should. Debate, differences of opinion, are important and healthy. But this one threw me.

A voice-over is a narration done by a broadcast reporter, usually reading from a script. The reporter’s voice is recorded over a sequence of video clips that tell a story. A standup is when a television reporter appears in front of the camera to narrate part of a story – most often at the beginning to set up the story, or at the very end.

This american life this american life is a multi host weekly public radio program and podcast. Each week they put together a collection of stories surrounding the same theme. Their favorite stories have compelling people at the center of them, funny moments, big feelings, surprising plot twists, and interesting ideas”. They describe them as “little movies for radio”. It is produced in collaboration with wbez chicago and delivered to stations by prx the public radio exchange. It can be classified as historical or human interest and is likely targeted at middle aged adults and history fanatics.

You can feel overwhelmed by the amount of information that you've got and how you would put that in order. But don't worry. There are some basic rules that you can follow. So this week we'll look at applying the five w's that we discovered in week 1. We'll introduce you to the news story template that we call the inverted pyramid. And we'll consider the importance of writing a concise intro. That's the first sentence of your story.
